What is the significance of the Iliad and Odyssey for Greek culture and identity?

What will be an ideal response?

The Iliad and Odyssey play a fundamental role in establishing a Greek cultural identity. They present examples of arête (virtue or excellence) to be emulated. They show the extremes of human nature: brutality and compassion and demonstrate that one is responsible for one's actions. They are the accumulated wisdom of earlier ages collected by Homer. They form the basis of Greek education.
