Why do so many people in the South and the West hold the view that political power in Washington, D.C., and economic power on Wall Street cannot be trusted?

What will be an ideal response?

The mistrust is partly historical, dating back to the image of the West as a retreat for individuals, and to the South's states' rights position on issues related to the Civil War and Reconstruction. It is also related to eastern financial dominance of the West and South that provoked the Populist revolt. Also, consider the history and perspective of the Mormon church and its influence in many western states. Finally, westerners hoping to exploit the land for economic gain as Americans have always done are confronted by federal government ownership of much of the West.
