Renewable energies like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are clearly greener than fossil fuels, but they still have drawbacks. What are some of the drawbacks of each kind of renewable energy, and how might these problems be solved?
What will be an ideal response?
Solar: Many resources are used up creating solar panels, and the process produces toxic pollutants as well. Using currently available solar panels supports the industry so they can work toward new and improved designs.
Wind: Fast-turning turbines kill birds and bats. A possible solution is to use slower-turning designs. Consumers in some places can pay a premium for electricity from wind power, which supports newly constructed wind farms.
Hydroelectric: The most environmentally damaging of the renewables because dams cause the extinction of salmon and other native fish. We need to remove large dams soon, before endangered fish species go extinct. Small-scale hydroelectric facilities, with turning water wheels, are less damaging but make less electricity as well.
