Explain, in terms of water's high heat capacity, why clients receiving cold and heat therapies need to be monitored carefully
What will be an ideal response?
When any substance changes states, it either takes in or gives up heat. This is why cold therapies and ice therapies can be so potent in their effects: They are excellent at drawing heat from the body. This is also why they need to be monitored carefully. If too much heat is drawn from the body too quickly, it can cause damage to tissues and be painful for the client. Heat therapies are powerful because they are excellent at transferring heat, and substances within the heat such as ginger or herbs, to the body. This is also why serious burns can occur with heat and steam treatments; they need to be monitored carefully as well.
