Juveniles enter the system through the intake branch. Intake officers review the
report submitted by the police and determine what should happen in each case. In order
to make their decision, the intake officer often conducts an interview to initially identify
whether the youth can be released or should be detained. This can involve
conversations with both the youth and their parents about topics such as school
attendance and performance, peer relationships, family dynamics, and at-risk behaviors
such as drug/alcohol use or mental health concerns.
