Why is it widely believed that the allotropic transformation is a diffusionless martensitic type?
What will be an ideal response?
Solution:
In titanium the transformation from ? to ? is so rapid that severe quenching processes, such as water quenching, cannot suppress the transformation. Since no compositional change is required for the process, it is believed that it is a diffusionless martensitic type process. Fig. 20.14 shows the required slight changes in the dimensions for the transformation.
