Why are all pregnant women screened for diabetes in pregnancy?

a. Placental hormones produce insulin resis-tance.
b. Increased dietary intake promotes the development of diabetes in pregnancy.
c. Carbohydrate metabolism is altered in preg-nancy.
d. The renal threshold for glucose is decreased in pregnancy.

A
Human placental lactogen lowers the sensitivity of the maternal cells to the action of insulin. Gestational diabetes results from the inability of the pancreas of the pregnant woman to produce enough insulin to move the necessary glucose into the cells for energy production. When this happens, glucose levels may need to be managed by changes in diet. Ketoacidosis may occur in a pregnant woman in whom diabetes has just been detected. Gabbe and colleagues (2007) state that because the pregnant woman is naturally in a state of insulin resistance with lipolysis and ketogenesis, ketoacidosis can occur in pregnant women with a blood glucose level as low as 200 mg/dL.
