Use a specific example to explain how a negative feedback mechanism may be used to regulate the function of
endocrine glands. What will be an ideal response?
The action of the parathyroid glands is an example of negative feedback in the endocrine
system. The parathyroid regulates the calcium concentration of the blood. When serum
calcium levels drop below the normal range the parathyroid glands are signaled to produce
parathyroid hormone which increases serum calcium levels. When those calcium levels are
above normal, the parathyroid glands decrease production of parathyroid hormone.
