Answer: Anemia is a condition in which the person has insufficient red blood cells (low hematocrit). Anemia can be caused by nutritional deficiencies (iron, vitamin B12, folic acid), insufficient secretion of erythropoietin, a condition that causes destruction of red blood cells (e.g. sickle cell anemia), bone marrow damage, or internal bleeding.
