The preceding discussion leads to the conclusion that high reliability is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for high validity. Hence, reliability serves as a limit or ceiling for validity. In other words, validity is reduced by unreliability. Some degree of unreliability, however, is unavoidably present in criteria as well as in predictors.
