a) A theory of the way children's cognitive development is influenced by the culture in which they are reared and those who teach them. Focus is on transmission of information and cognitive skills from generation to generation. He does not view learning as a mechanical process – rather the focus is on the social interactions with adults and how they influence children's learning experiences.
b) (1) Zone of proximal development – range of appropriate tasks that can be accomplished with supervision. (2) Scaffolding – temporary support given to child by parent or teacher while she/he learns a new task. Scaffolding is decreased as child learns the task.
c) Piaget's focus is maturationally based on brain development. Vygotsky focused on the teacher-learner relationship and social/cultural interaction.
