A friend who has not taken public speaking asks for your advice. He is scheduled to give a

speech in another class and wonders whether he needs to practice his delivery.

Explain why
practicing is important, then give him six suggestions that have helped you practice for your
public speaking assignments.
What will be an ideal response?

This question requires that students be able to reason out why and how practicing can
improve their performance.  The text gives 13 suggestions:  Allow ample time to
practice.  Always practice with the same key word outline, note cards or manuscript
you plan to use when delivering your speech.  Always practice your speech as if you
were delivering it to your intended audience.  Go through the entire speech during each
practice.  Do not try to deliver your speech the same way each time you practice it.  Do
not coordinate specific gestures with the exact wording of your speech.  Practice your
speech aloud with the same volume you plan to use in delivering it.  Practice the speech
mentally as well as aloud.  Practice your speech each time with whatever visual aids
you plan to use.  Time your speech.  Practice the way you will approach the speaker?s
stand and leave it.  Use a tape or video recorder.  Try to practice at least once in the
room where you?ll deliver your speech.
