Discuss the clinical significance of the xiphoid process

What will be an ideal response?

The xiphoid process is the most inferior portion of the sternum. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should involve the placement of the hands over the sternum between the person's two nipples. Compressions should occur over the sternal body instead of the xiphoid process. Compressions applied directly to the xiphoid process can cause it to break off, damaging underlying organs such as the liver.
