Why have sports governing bodies banned the use of EPO in athletes?
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: EPO stimulates erythrocyte production, which in turn directly relates to the amount of
oxygen that can be carried in the blood of a person. Injected EPO would result in a greater
oxygen carrying capacity, potentially offering an unfair advantage to an athlete compared
to another who had not taken excess EPO.
