Discuss what happens during the aging phase of marriage. Are aging couples portrayed by mass media? If you answer yes, give examples of media portrayals of aging couples, and indicate whether these portrayals are accurate
If you answer no, discuss why you think aging couples are not portrayed by mass media.
What will be an ideal response?
The student should indicate that after 30 or 40 years of marriage, a couple enters the retirement phase of marriage. This period is marked with increased satisfaction, as they now have time for one another. It is also a time of conflicting marital expectations. The full-time wife may not be used to the husband being home all day. A wife may not be as deferential to her husband's authority if he is not earning income. Health and financial considerations can help or hinder the success of this stage in marriage. The student's discussion should also indicate if aging couples are portrayed by the mass media. If the student indicates that they are, he/she should provide examples and an opinion about the accuracy of these portrayals. If the student indicates that mass media does not represent aging couples, he/she should indicate why.
