Explain how the trp operon is regulated in a prokaryotic cell when tryptophan is present.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers may vary but should include the following:
1. Tryptophan binds to the repressor.
2. The binding causes the shape of the repressor to be altered.
3. The receptor is now active and can bind to the operator.
4. This prevents the RNA polymerase from attaching to the promotor and allowing the structural genes from being expressed.
