In terms of cancer, cells that lose their growth control and no longer behave like normal cells are referred to as transformed. In the context of bacterial genetics and gene manipulation, however, as was discussed in Chapter 9 and Chapter 15, transformation refers to a living cell picking up naked DNA from outside the cell and incorporating it into its genome.
