Although faced with large amounts uncertainty and anxiety during initial intercultural communication, an individual's sociocommunicative style may enable him or her to effectively reduce uncertainty. Two dimensions of sociocommunicative style are called assertiveness and responsiveness. Assertiveness refers to an individual's ability to make requests; actively disagree; express positive or negative personal rights and feelings; initiate, sustain, and terminate conversations; and defend oneself without attacking others. Responsiveness refers to an individual's ability to be sensitive to the communication of others, be a good listener, engage in comforting communication, and recognize the needs and wants of relevant others.
