List the three types of IRB review allowed under federal regulations. Give a brief description of the main distinctions of each.
What will be an ideal response?
- Full committee review: review of all documentation is conducted by members of the full committee at a regularly scheduled meeting at which a quorum is present. A majority vote of the members of the full committee is required to take action. They may approve, disapprove, or modify the research protocols submitted.
- Expedited review: review of studies that pose no more than minimal risk to the human subject and fall within certain categories as defined by federal regulations. They may approve, modify, or refer the protocol to full committee review. They cannot disapprove as that authority only rests with the full committee.
- Exempted from review: must fall within one of the six categories that are exempted from review by federal law. Submitted to the IRB where the Chair or staff member reviews the protocol to determine if the exemption applies. If prisoners are the research subjects, the exemption will not be allowed.
