Summarize the three cardinal signs of diabetes mellitus
What will be an ideal response?
Diabetes mellitus is characterized by polyuria, polyphagia, and polydipsia. Polyuria flushes out glucose while polydipsia is excessive thirst resulting from water lost in the urine. Polyphagia is the hunger due to the inability to use sugars and the loss of fat and proteins from the body. Type I diabetes results from the hyposecretion of insulin and causes glucose to be lost in the urine. In contrast, an individual with type II diabetes releases insulin, but their insulin receptors are unable to respond to it.
