Many who do smoke marijuana or use prostitutes may not see the connection or understand themselves as deviant consumers. By contrast, dangerous consumers are seen as people who deviate from a normal level of consumption, typically consuming less than what is considered “enough.” These include the poor, unemployed, “dropouts,” or people who adopt a voluntary simplicity lifestyle. They are dangerous because they pose a threat to the success of an economy that is based on a high level of consumption.
