Briefly discuss the impact expressive arts therapy has on self-expression.
What will be an ideal response?
All expressive therapies (as well as most therapies) encourage clients to engage in self-exploration. Expressive arts therapy is based on the underlying assumption that all people have the ability to be creative. It permits the client to express a wide range of emotions such as fury, fear, sorrow, happiness, and anger. Creative self-expression is intrinsically curative and promotes a person’s well-being and health. Expressive arts therapists act to facilitate their client’s own discovery of personal meaning and understanding in the expressive artwork. They help people to communicate aspects of their lives that might not be readily apparent through conversation (Malchiodi, 2005).
