You have been asked to design the on?board computer for a deep space vehicle. What special considerations would you have to take into consideration and how would it affect your design?

What will be an ideal response?

There are three problems with memory in spacecraft. The first is that power is very limited. It comes from either batteries (ok only for short missions), solar power (diminishes on long deep space journeys as the sun is left behind), or nuclear power (ok for long journeys but worry about the consequences of a failed launch).
For all these reasons, power consumption is a prime concern. The next problem is the effect of ionizing
radiation. Away from the protection of the atmosphere and the Earth’s magnetic field, cosmic radiation is a problem. A high?energy charged particle can erase data in DRAM. Magnetic and ovonic memories are far more robust than DRAM that stores data as a charge.

The third problem is that the memory must be very reliable. The call?out cost of a repair?being is quite
astronomical once you are beyond the orbit of Mars.
