True or False: A phenylketonuria (PKU) blood test can be done any time before an infant is

discharged to home. If false, explain your rationale.

What will be an ideal response?

False
PKU results from a deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine dehydrogenase. Without this enzyme,
the infant will not be able to digest certain proteins properly. If the condition is left undetected,
these proteins build up in the body and can cause mental retardation. The test for PKU is not reliable
until the newborn has ingested an adequate amount of the amino acid phenylalanine. The initial
ingestion of milk needs to be documented and the test performed at least 24 hours after that time.
