Explain how parents going through a divorce can best try to minimize the harmful effects on their infant or toddler.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: An attachment relationship is more vulnerable when it is in the early stages of formation, as attachment theory would predict. Infants and toddlers who spent a large number of nights with the nonresident parent showed more emotional dysregulation. The same was not true for 4–5-year olds. Both developmental needs and the importance of maintaining healthy relationships with both parents throughout life must inform decisions about child custody arrangements for infants. Parents who remarry should remember that young children need consistency and stability in their relationships and environments.
