Barkley proposed that "deficits in behavioral inhibition" may be the source of the symptoms observed in youngsters with ADHD. Describe the concept of deficits in behavioral inhibition and its implications for learner functioning

What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
Barkley described children with ADHD as those who have a deficiency in tolerance for delay within tasks and a reduced ability to delay responses, leading to acting impulsively. He hypothesized that ADHD is better characterized as disinhibition (i.e., a deficit in delay of response). The inability to delay responses interrupts basic thought processes, including: (1) separating a message into affective and content components, (2) holding a stimulus long enough to perform mental operations with it, (3) reflecting on the meaning of a stimuli, and (4) reconstituting the message into a new thought or concept. Barkley suggested that basic thinking processes may in fact be intact in learners with ADHD, but that it is the behavioral disinhibition that does not allow time for thinking to occur before acting. We may more accurately characterize individuals with ADHD as those who act before having time to think, rather than as those who do not think or who lack the ability to attend and think before acting. Training in self-monitoring and self-instruction may be useful with these learners.
