Explain how globalization theories relate to social problems. Do you agree with these theories? Why or why not? Give specific examples to support your position.

What will be an ideal response?

• Other analysts have argued that what is needed is “globalization-from-below”
In other words, people cannot rely on governments and corporations to solve social problems. Indeed, it is necessary to develop a human agenda that will offset the corporate agenda that has produced many of the problems in the first place. Social activists Jeremy Brecher and Tim Costello (1998) suggest these criteria for any proposed human agenda:
It should improve the lives of the great majority of the world’s people over the long run.
• It should correspond to widely held common interests and should integrate the interests of people around the world.
• It should provide mechanisms for action at a variety of levels.
• It should include elements that can be at least partially implemented independently but that are compatible
or mutually reinforcing.
• It should make it easier, not harder, to solve noneconomic
problems such as protection of the environment and reduction of war.
• It should grow organically out of social movements and coalitions that have developed in response to the needs of diverse peoples
