What are the four stages to demographic transition theory?
Please provide the best answer for the statement
1. Demographic transition theory argues that people control their own fertility as societies
move from agrarian to industrial.
2. Stage 1: The society is not industrialized. Birth and mortality rates are high, life
expectancy is short, and infant mortality is high. Economically, it’s beneficial to have large
numbers of children so they can assist you in day-to-day physical labor. Population grows
slowly because birth rates and death rates are similar.
3. Stage 2: Countries enter the initial phase of industrialization. New technologies mean
fewer people are needed for physical labor. People migrate to urban areas seeking work in
factories. Modernization brings a generally higher standard of living. Birth rates remain
high and infant mortality drops. Life expectancy increases, resulting in a rapid death rate
decline. Population grows fastest at this stage because of stable birth rates and rapidly
declining death rates.
4. Stage 3: Birth rates decline after the country establishes itself as an industrialized nation.
Life expectancy continues to improve, resulting in lower and more stable death rates. The
new economic and social conditions appear to influence individual choices, and people
willingly control their own fertility. The rate of population growth declines, although the
population is still growing
5. Stage 4: Once a nation enters into a postindustrial economy, the population growth
stabilizes and can even decline. Typically, birth and death rates are low. This theory
suggests that industrialization actually improves people’s quality of life. Since they are
healthier and live longer, the population grows rapidly at first. However, with
development, the population stabilizes.
