Discuss the conflict theory perspective in regard to science and technology studies. Be sure to provide specific examples to support your answer.

What will be an ideal response?

A conflict theory approach studies aspects of social problems that are contested within the scientific culture. For instance, the use of male subjects in several clinical trials in the United States was viewed as being a social problem in the late 1980s. The social problem was addressed by the 1993 National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act. In addition, conflict theory can also expose the social relationships defined by material and social conditions within social issues. For example, the unpaid labor of housewives was thought of as a social problem in the 1960s, at the same time that industrialized nations were adopting household technologies. Essentially, by utilizing the conflict theory to look at the conditions of women's activities in the home, we can describe the social and technological changes that contribute to the social problem.
