Why should you be very careful when considering changing jobs or careers? What are the potential consequences? ?

Many people don’t understand the difference between a job and a career. As a result, they spend a great deal of time and money changing careers when they only need to change jobs. In other cases, people change jobs repeatedly and continue to be dissatisfied because they’re not in the right career. Rarely can you just jump into another career without making sacrifices, such as taking a cut in pay. Give any change of job serious thought and planning. A job may look good, but without proper research, you could find yourself in a situation that is as bad as or worse than your current one. Benefits of not changing jobs include:

  • Staying is less risky because you are already established and don’t need to repeat the process of adjusting to new surroundings and people.

  • Your reputation for job stability is better if you stay rather than move frequently from one employer to another.

  • In outsourcing and offshoring situations, some employers recognize the value of keeping their best employees. They may offer you retraining opportunities and help you transition out of a vulnerable position.

  • You won’t lose accumulated benefits such as vacation time, retirement, and profit sharing.

  • If your current job offers important benefits such as healthcare coverage and life insurance, it can be risky to give them up. With today’s rising cost of benefits, some employers are finding it too expensive to provide extensive coverage. When considering a job change, always consider benefits in conjunction with rewards and compensation.
