Discuss how interactionist view the police and social institutions
What will be an ideal response?
Interactionists are generally interested in what goes on within particular groups when institutions (a concept that they may have difficulty acknowledging, given that it is larger than the level of most interactionist analysis) intersect with the police. For example, in family violence situations, we mentioned above that the police now are subject to mandatory arrest policies. If they go into one of these situations and it is not clear who is responsible for provoking the violence, or who caused the most injury, how do the police know whom to arrest? What characteristics and cues do they use for this purpose? When in doubt, do they automatically arrest the male, as is often alleged? Ultimately, doing their job involves interpreting the mandates of various social institutions as it filters to the police officers on the beat.
