What is the difference between grand jury hearings and preliminary hearings?

What will be an ideal response?

Grand jury hearings are not adversarial proceedings: only the government presents evidence. Defendants cannot offer evidence or appear before grand juries. Furthermore, preliminary hearings are open and public; grand jury proceedings are secret and closed. There are severe penalties for grand jurors or others who "leak" information presented to a grand jury. Finally, magistrates preside over preliminary hearings; prosecutors oversee grand jury proceedings.
