What is a neurotransmitter?

What will be an ideal response?

A neurotransmitter is a chemical that is released from a nerve cell which transmits an impulse from one nerve cell to another nerve, muscle, organ, or other tissue. It is essentially a messenger of neurologic information from one cell to another (Zillmer, Spiers, & Culbertson, 2008). Neurotransmitters contribute to a person’s cognitive, emotional, psychological and behavioral responses or patterns in life. A person’s production of neurotransmitters has been linked to environmental stressors and his or her lifestyle (including diet, coping strategies, and leisure time). Many of the problems that clients mention during therapy and counseling can be traced to their brain chemistry and either the over or underproduction of specific neurotransmitters (Zillmer, Spiers, & Culbertson, 2008).
