Explain how work and workplaces have changed in the U.S., and elsewhere, as a part of globalization.

What will be an ideal response?

1. In the U.S. there has been a decline of lower-skill, well-paying, manufacturing jobs with benefits, and an increase in tech and other high-skill firms. This shift has benefited some, but created employment problems for more (e.g., Detroit).
2. China has experienced dramatic increases in manufacturing. They are the world’s largest exporter. They are able to maintain this position only through a highly exploited, poorly paid labor force.
3. Workers in Mexico (and other comparable nations) are characterized by the same maltreatment of workers. Mexico’s situation is arguably exacerbated by NAFTA, though this is debated.
4. Overall, globalization is not “out of our hands.” Governments can make policies that would limit the ways workers are treated and/or what kinds of jobs are maintained and available to Americans workers.
