The five key steps of the Concept Development model are Listing, Grouping, Labeling, Regrouping, and Synthesizing. The first step, Listing, aims to establish a baseline, and involves having students list as many items as possible associated with the concept and to challenge them to produce a mental inventory of their existing knowledge of the concept. The second step, Grouping, aims to challenge students to interpret the items they have listed, analyze these items, and represent their thinking about how items are related by organizing the listed items into groups to show how they relate to one another. The third step, Labeling, aims to help students articulate and formalize their thinking about their grouping decisions by analyzing their reasons for grouping the items in a particular way and defining the reasons for their groupings. The fourth step, Regrouping, aims to consider and recognize alternative patterns existing in the items listed, and to reorganize any items that may be grouped more appropriately after labeling. The fifth step, Synthesizing, aims to help students create a generalization about the concept being explored by examining all of the groups and their labels.
