Describe the different types of groups and topics that are available for the LGBT population and their loved ones
What will be an ideal response?
As LGBT persons have become more visible, organized groups have become more common. LGBT persons have taken the initiative and created organizations and groups to provide social support for members of their community. Groups offer support to offset the isolation, oppression, and alienation of being gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in U.S. society. There are groups for women, men, racial and ethnic minorities, youth, and older individuals. There are groups that address coming out, gender transition, relationships, career and life planning, spirituality, and parenting. There are groups for parents of gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender children, their own children, and their spouses. In addition, there are groups addressing issues that are not necessarily related to sexual orientation or gender identity, such as substance abuse, personal growth and specific mental health concerns. All of these diverse groups in the LGBT community can be divided into three primary categories: common-interest, self-help, and counseling (or therapy).
