The splitting of water produces three products. Name and discuss the role of each. What will be an ideal response?

First, an electron is liberated. This electron is excited by photosystem II and passed through the
noncyclic pathway of photosynthesis. Second, hydrogen ions are generated, and these contribute to
the high density of hydrogen ions in the thylakoid compartment. Last, oxygen is produced. This is a
waste product to the photosynthetic organism but is responsible for the oxygen-rich environment
today.
