When examining student samples of work in practicing subtraction of whole numbers, what should teacher expect to find and then do to help the student?

What will be an ideal response?

Complete answers will include the following descriptions. The teacher may expect to find two error patterns. In error pattern 1, the student subtracts the smaller number from the larger number instead of subtracting the subtrahend (bottom number) from the minuend (top number). Ask the student to use a manipulative material for place value and emphasize the process of regrouping when the digit in the subtrahend is greater than the digit in the minuend stressing that it is possible to take a larger number from a smaller number if the number can be regrouped. In error pattern 2, the student always regroups. Ask the student to model regrouping with manipulative materials and verbalize the rule to use for determining when to regroup.
