ANSWER: When humans became bipedal and were active in the hot sun of Africa, overheating would
have been a major concern. Losing hair would be one way to protect against overheating, as
would an increase in the density of sweat glands. However, if chimpanzees are any
indication, our now hairless and pink-skinned ancestors would have been very exposed to
potentially damaging sunlight. As a result, increasingly darker melanin evolved to protect
the skin from sun exposure.
