How would you help students who overuse phonics?
What will be an ideal response?
Use the following techniques to help student who overuse phonics:
• Make sure the material they read is on the appropriate level. If readers encounter too many unknown words they may resort to the overuse of phonics.
• Stress reading for meaning. Some students become overly concerned with accurate word recognition.
• Stress silent reading. Oral reading can lead to a preoccupation with correct
pronunciation of words rather than the construction of meaning.
