How would you test battery capacity without a carbon pile VAT (volt-amp tester)?

What will be an ideal response?

Battery capacity can be tested without a carbon pile VAT in the following manner:
1. To prevent the engine from starting, disable its fuel or ignition system.
2. Remove the surface charge from the battery's plates by turning on the high beam headlights for 30 seconds.
3. Connect a voltmeter to the positive and negative terminals of the battery.
4. Crank the engine with the starter motor for 15 seconds.
5. If battery voltage is 9.6 volts or higher, the battery is good.
6. If battery voltage is below 9.6 volts, recharge the battery and repeat the test. If the result is still below 9.6 volts, check for excessive starter motor draw. If the starter is good, replace the battery.
