Crimes involving computers can be crimes using computers and/or crimes against computer systems. Many times, they are both—using computers to harm computer systems. Computer crime includes committing fraud and scams over the Internet, unauthorized copying of software protected by copyright (called software piracy), and theft of services, such as cable television. Software piracy costs the software industry billions of dollars a year. According to the Business Software Alliance, more than 30 percent of software is pirated. Theft of information, including breaking into a medical database and gaining access to medical records, is also considered a crime.
