In country X, a chemical released into a forested area had a strong fungicidal effect. As a result many of the fungi comprising mycorrhizae have died. What may be the consequences of this chemical release?
What will be an ideal response?
The best answers should address the importance of the fungi in the mycorrhizae relationship. These fungi greatly enhance the transport and thus the absorption ability of plant roots. Therefore, if the fungi were killed one would expect forest productivity to decrease and perhaps even death of some of the trees. On a larger scale plant productivity would be expected to decrease if mycorrhizae relationships were disrupted.
