1. Nonverbal messages are inevitable: All behavior communicates, and we all "behave" all the time, whether intentionally or unintentionally. However, we do not speak all of the time, so verbal messages are not inevitable.
2. Nonverbal messages are continuous: Very similar to the previous characteristic, nonverbal signals are constantly being sent and interpreted, whether accurately or not. Again, verbal messages are discrete; they can be started and stopped, but the nonverbal behavior continues.
3. Nonverbal messages are ambiguous: Nonverbal meanings vary by relationship, culture, context, etc. While verbal messages are also decoded denotatively and connotatively, we have so much going on with nonverbal messages that their meanings are less clear.
4. Nonverbal messages convey believable emotions: Much research has shown that how we say something carries much more emotional believability than what we say.
5. Nonverbal messages are multichanneled: Nonverbal messages are carried through all of our five senses; verbal messages are sent in the words that we say (or write). Though we can say only one word at a time, we can nonverbally communicate through five channels at once.
