Why were the Vikings so problematic for western Europe?
What will be an ideal response?
Overpopulation in Scandinavia resulted in an emigration, in several waves, of Vikings. Some sought agricultural land, but most formed a seasonal form of labor, balancing between agriculture half the time and raiding during the other half. Their attacks were primarily on monasteries, but they also formed raiding parties, aided by their superior long ships, that went into England and France, sailed up the rivers of Europe into the heartlands, and traveled into Russia. Their targets were easily portable goods, including gold and slaves; they were not predisposed to trade, although they would sometimes engage in trade on the way home after raiding. Part of their fearsome reputation is attributed to their warrior status, as well as their pagan ways. The epic Beowulf presents a narrative of the Vikings that combines pre-Christian myths with Christian tradition and demonstrates that feared warrior ethos in the person of the hero who fought to slay the monster, Grendel.
