The nursing assistant must know and be alert for the signs and symptoms of diabetic coma and insulin shock. You must know the location of easily assimilated forms of carbohydrates on the nursing unit. Always check the trays to be sure that the patient gets the proper tray and the proper food items. Do not give extra snacks without permission. Monitor and record the amount that the patient consumes. If the patient does not eat, report to the nurse.
Pay special attention to foot care for the diabetic patient. Wash the feet daily and dry well between the toes. Check the feet for any signs of skin cracks, breaks, or irritation, and report them to the nurse. Do not allow moisture to collect between the patient's toes. Shoes and socks should be clean and fit well. The patient should not go barefoot.
The nursing assistant should perform urine testing as directed by the nurse and according to the level of training received. The results of these tests should be reported to the nurse and recorded.
