FBA is a problem-solving process that looks beyond the behavior itself to identify factors associated with the behavior and select interventions that directly address the problem behavior.This process offers a better understanding of the function or purpose behind student behavior.Behavior intervention plans that are based on an understanding of “why” a student misbehaves are extremely useful in addressing a wide range of problem behaviors (CECP, 2001).FBA allows us to understand a student’s purpose for engaging in a particular behavior, so we can then implement interventions that teach replacement behaviors. Once we understand the purpose of a student’s behavior through FBA, that information is then used to plan an effective behavior intervention.
