Summarize the current recommendations for nutrition therapy for GERD

What will be an ideal response?

• Goals of the nutrition therapy are consistent with goals of medical care discussed earlier.
• These goals include reducing gastric acidity, restricting foods that lower LES pressure, and protecting the esophageal mucosa.
• To reduce gastric acidity, black and red pepper, coffee (both caffeinated and decaffeinated), and alcohol should be avoided because all have been identified as stimulants for gastric acid production.
• Likewise, meals of larger quantity that are high in fat delay gastric emptying and increase the risk of reflux.
• Thus, smaller, more frequent meals may be indicated.
• Foods that lower LES pressure should also be restricted. These include
• Chocolate
• Mint
• Foods with a high fat content
• Any food the client identifies as irritating should be avoided.
• If the patient is obese, weight reduction should be a component of the plan for nutrition therapy.
• Remaining upright after eating and the avoidance of eating within three hours prior to bedtime can help utilize gravity in order to prevent acid reflux.
