Define the term expected progeny difference (EPD), and explain how it should be used.
What will be an ideal response?
Expected progeny difference (EPD) is an estimate of the genetic value of an animal in passing its genetic traits to its offspring. EPDs are measures of expected differences in performance of a sire’s or dam’s offspring by comparing individual animals to the average offspring of all sires and dams in the same breed. The EPD is based on actual performance, progeny performance, and relatives’ performance. Students should compare given data to the breed average while evaluating EPDs_
