What is the meaning of bigamous or polygamous marriages?

Having multiple spouses (polygamy) or merely two (bigamy), all states have laws prohibiting this type of marriage as in violation of public policy. The most common problem in this area probably stems from unintentional bigamy, where a prior marriage was not properly terminated before a subsequent marriage was undertaken. A putative spouse who believed him- or herself to be married may be protected by state laws. Although the first marriage is the presumptively legal one, bigamy can not only serve as grounds for annulment, it can in some cases be considered grounds for divorce (violating the basic rule that in order to obtain a divorce, there must be a legal marriage), thus protecting the unwitting putative spouse.
